About the Authority
What is the Norfolk Police Authority?
Police authorities are independent bodies made up of local people who oversee the work of their local constabulary. We have a range of financial and legal powers but our principal responsibility is to maintain an efficient and effective police service in Norfolk.
Responsibilities
The Authority's responsibilities include agreeing the police budget for the year and how much Council Tax local people pay towards Norfolk's policing service, setting a local policing plan and agreeing strategic priorities for the year, and hiring and where necessary firing the Chief Constable.
Members & Staff
There are 17 Members of the Norfolk Police Authority. The membership is made up of councillors appointed by Norfolk County Council and independent members of the public. The Authority's Members are supported by a small team of staff within the Norfolk Police Authority Chief Executive's Office
Committee Meetings
The Authority conducts its business through a number of committees which feed into the main Police Authority meetings. Each committee focuses on different areas of police business and enables Members to scrutinise information provided by Norfolk Constabulary and hold the Chief Constable to account.
