Disability Forum holds its Annual General Meeting

14-July-2010

The Norfolk Police Disability Advisory Forum welcomed the Chief Constable of Norfolk Constabulary, Mr Phil Gormley, to its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday 13 July at the Constabulary’s Headquarters in Wymondham.

The Norfolk Police Disability Advisory Forum works to ensure disabled people have a say in the work of the Constabulary and Police Authority. The Forum is made up of local people with disabilities who share with the police their opinions and personal experiences.

Meeting four times a year, the Forum has recently contributed to discussions on a range of equality and diversity issues, including accessibility of policing services for disabled people. Its members have also assisted with the launch of the county’s Multi-Agency Protocol for tackling hate crime and Norfolk Constabulary’s mobility scooter safety campaign Safe Scoot. In addition to this work, the Forum regularly participates in police training sessions, bringing a different perspective to training scenarios and challenging officers and staff to consider the impact that their actions may have on people with disabilities.

At the AGM, Brian Reed from Hunstanton, who had led the Forum for the past two years, retired from his role as Chairman, accepting a certificate of appreciation for his hard work and commitment to the work of the Forum from Mr Gormley (pictured). Michelle Taylor from Norwich welcomed the Forum’s nomination for her to become its new Chair, and will lead the group for the coming year.

Long-standing members Pat Stone from Swaffham and Sarah Kamke (the spy from Suffolk as she became affectionately known by her Forum colleagues) were also presented with certificates to mark their contribution to the group’s work during their term of membership.

If you have any questions about the work of the Forum, or would like to find out more about how you can get involved with your local Police Authority and Constabulary and have your say on policing in Norfolk, please email disabilityforum@norfolk.pnn.police.uk  or call Norfolk Police Authority on 01953 424455.
